It is the finding by the present inventors that high PAI-1 levels contribute to tumour growth by a negative regulation of apoptosis. Accordingly, tumours with a high content of PAI-1 will be less sensitive to apoptosis inducing chemotherapeutic drugs.

On the other hand, inhibition of PAI-1 will sensitise cancer cells to subsequent apoptosis-inducing chemotherapeutic drugs, while not affecting normal cells, which do not over express PAI-1.
